What the hell is going on? I doubt they're really concerned about anyone's safety, so what is the ulterior motive behind this? I've seen claims that it's just the same fearmongering scheme to pump their valuation by pretending the tech is more capable than it is but to be fair, AI tech really is getting quite scary nowadays. There are some theories that they might be colluding to aim for regulatory capture which seems more plausible to me. Thoughts?

After thinking for a bit about this I'm leaning towards the end goal being banning uncensored open weight models. The media has been on the case for a while (see e.g. https://www.wsj.com/opinion/unregulated ... r-c16c278f), they're trying to convince people that open models will be used by terrorists to design advanced weapons so that everyone gets forced to rely on heavily censored models that push propaganda.

they have a financial interest in making AI look dangerous. because if it looks scary enough it becomes much easier to push through regulations that demand massive compliance resources which by definition eliminates smaller players and open-source competitors. the Chinese are quietly releasing better and better local models, not screaming about every major bug but instead just patching things under the hood and moving on. idk but to me this theory is currently the best explanation for all this doomsday noise
