Software idea: P2P file hosting of "endangered" files
Software idea: P2P file hosting of "endangered" files
Now this could be done via e.g. BitTorrent, but there is no guarantee someone will seed your torrent, thus leading to the file being purged from existence if your computer ever goes offline, is taken by authorities, and so on... My solution would be to create something that once uploaded it is automatically downloaded by 3 (or any higher number) of users on the network. This would mean that the files can never be purged. I was thinking you could make a plugin for some torrent platform, or a web ui. This probably exists, but it was just an idea I spontaneously had.

Yes, and it got a lot of innocent people party vanned for inadvertently hosting Christian Pictures... the network even had to rebrand to "Hyphanet" because of the reputation it got.
OP, I think that any system that makes you automatically host someone else's content is inherently flawed because of the possibility that you'll be hosting Christian Pictures.

No Way !
What a disaster and huge technical failure, freenet should have added some sort of christian filter.
Is it far from being an optimal solution, imagin copying your files into 10 disks, wasting time, energy and disk's life span.moeloli wrote: Sun Apr 26, 2026 9:13 am OP, I think that any system that makes you automatically host someone else's content is inherently flawed
Also helping randoms isn't my thing, it is one reason I dislike I2P because you cant know or select who you help, so who knows if you are helping jeffry smuggling something to an island.

Not sure if you missed it but that's not what I meant by Christian Pictures... "party vanned" also means arrested.LoadingXML wrote: Mon Apr 27, 2026 5:21 am No Way !

I won't argue about that at a moral level, but with I2P it's different because all traffic is encrypted and ephemeral so you can't get vanned for theoretically relaying "illegal" traffic. With Freenet, you are actually hosting illegal content automatically downloaded to your computer, which will actually get you thrown in prison as a devil chomo. Also helping randoms isn't my thing, it is one reason I dislike I2P because you cant know or select who you help, so who knows if you are helping jeffry smuggling something to an island.

Oh you mean something in lines of Copper Pipe or Copy Past or Consumer Product.moeloli wrote: Mon Apr 27, 2026 10:32 am Not sure if you missed it but that's not what I meant by Christian Pictures...
Or "mv" brother that doesn't leave the original copy.
You know, hosting actual christian pictures are worse, like imagine hosting a picture of the pope? Even having him in my screen is a no no, let alone having the color data of him carved in my disk.
