I bought the wrong phone. Fuck.

Post by LarrySwinger »

So I bought a pixel 8 pro for purposes of security and non-gay (repository freedom). At first I used it with a cover but it's too unpleasant that way. The device is bully by itself, nevermind with a cover. So I removed it but I still get hand cramps. That's how heavy it is. Plus it's tiresome to move your hand to the top of the screen while some programs inconveniently put the back button there.

The pixel 8 only weights 185 gr compared to this device's 220 so I have my sights on that now. I don't need the extra 4gb ram. I tested some local ais and they're all shit anyway. There is no use for nore than 8gb ram. This device is for web browsing, reading books, taking notes, courses, etc. All light stuff. So the pixel 8 is better in every way for me and then I can sell this one.

Do you like the phone you own?

Last phone I liked was lenovo vibe 2, I rooted, rommed, moded, modified and freaking made the thing unusable by anyone but me, the amount of degoogling and debloating I did made it so barebone you had to cheerypick its uses.

but that was the last phone I considered "my phone" as in I had the freedom to do all sorts of expirements and so on.

currently I got Galaxy A36 5G, It has 2 issues really:

1-The design makes it so you keep pressing the return button by mistake using your hand skin, this happened so often I removed the back button all together, also the design made me make a lot of typos when typing, I even switched keyboards hoping I gain back my accuracy.

2-It doesn't have the audio pin adapter, in other words the only way to connect a headphone/headset is through bluetooth, seriously...

Bonus: Once it upgraded and they asked me to sign up for SUMSUNG ACCOUNT in order for the phone to work (I was locked at setup thing), well with no hope to escape this (trust me I tried) I went and signed up for it, but oops, they ask for some SMS confirmation that never came, in other words, I was locked out of my phone because of a shitty thing.

however using my hyper-intelligence (go figure) I simply went outside to a place I don't have internet access, and they gave the option to skip the thing.

Bonus 2:

Here is a list of companies I would never buy phone from (due to my expierenece):

1-Hawawi
2-Oppo

Of course I did, that's the point of getting a Pixel. I meant to imply as much with the first line.

I'd never pick a phone this phone if there was wider support for GrapheneOS. There is no microSD slot or 3.5mm port. Let's hope Motorola will fix that next year.

I have Motorola e22 for 3 years. It does what i want but the battery is almost dead. It also has google services because i use whatsapp and some other apps that need it. So I'm being heretic here, a community adovcating for privacy and i have that shit. There is no custom roms afaik and if so, i wouldn't bother because of fear bricking it, as i did with my older one.

Once it dies, not sure what i am going to do or which new one i will buy, haven't decided yet.

I think you're lucky you got this phone, pretty decent if you ask me.

The best size in the pixels was the pixel 5, which I still use with lineageOS. Everything is blocked with RethinkDNS except the apps I use like simpleX a few others and the time servers. The next best size is the pixel 8, I have the 8a which is still in the box, for future use. The rest are bricks.
The Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a all have the Tensor chip so you can the IMEI number.
Here is the guide.- https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/pix ... uide/26295

If Linux phones were cheaper and had better support I would be using one of those.

Thanks. Yes I have my sights on the pixel 8. To make sure I can write on it I went for the largest as before this I have always used phones with a physical keyboard. However they should just change the aspect ratio to 16:9 imo so that there is more width. They mostly increase the length which ducks up the weight distribution. Fucks. Also linsucks phones are riddled with issues such as decreased security and battery drain. Don't get one it's a pipe dream. Not to mention it requires doing a lot in the cli for advanced use but that's uncomfortable on a phone. I had a Nokia n900 before and it was cool to have but also quite a pain.

Linux phones never got off the ground because the phone companies work with, and in one of the two types, are owned by the software providers. It is very expensive to make a phone, which is the opposite of the linux ethos. We will be forever stuck with apple or android, it's sad to say.

I was considering getting the 8 pro only because of the better cameras and the telephoto lens, otherwise I prefer the 8 since it's more compact in the hands and easier to use. There's also the 9 pro but is more expensive.

I just pointed out two tecnical issues with Linux phones. Did you read my post? The Pinephone is reasonably priced. The issue is that it sucks. (I haven't tested it, but last time I checked, they still had battery issues.)

I have an Xperia XZ1 Compact. Its the perfect small phone, if you ask me (alongside the Galaxy S5/S10e, and Pixel 4a). It is small (4.6"), though has larger brother XZ1 and even better, XZ Premium. It has a microsd card slot and easily removable sim card. Is is 4G (any phone with 5G can be tossed immediately), and has a nice utilitarian boxy design. It has USB-C and a headphone jack. Furthermore, it has an LCD instead of an AM/OLED which is better for your eyes apparently. It does not have a removable battery unfortunately. The performance is also very good for its age and easily enough for modern use, not to mention that it is easy to unlock the bootloader even on locked models (I have a guide on my website soon if anyone wants)

Regarding the other phones (all sub £100) and some of their differences to the XZ1 compact
Pixel 4a - 5.8", OLED, good performance, 4G, good for modern usage. Viable
Galaxy S10e - similar to pixel 4a
Xperia X compact - predecessor to XZ1 compact, mine had sim card reader issues. Battery is very easy to replace compared to xz1 compact, and even other phones. It is quite a bit slower and IMHO not as well designed in some aspects.
Xperia XZ1 / XZ premium - larger form factor, still LCD.
Galaxy S5 - removable battery, micro-usb, OLED. Bit too slow IMHO but still usable. My banking app was slow but others work fine on a custom ROM ofc.

I use Samsung Galaxy A05s, it's part of Samsung's budget line-up. Advantages are headphone jack, NFC and pretty usable. It's also waterproof. Disadvantage is no support for privacy-focused custom ROMs.

Avoid phones that run Android Go (lite version of Android) as despite the lightweight OS the specs are still poor for regular usage (I owned two such phones and they crash when opening basic applications such as the Settings option), have low storage and have parental-lock level of restrictions.
