Something that doesn't get spoken at all is the fact that a child who is cut off from legitimate work for pay (often by law; but let's be real no one wants to give honest jobs to children at all, no matter how promising and responsible), but receives a slap on the wrist for doing criminal stuff (as is often the law as well), will have nowhere to go to but sail the high seas. I used to sympathize with adults getting falsely accused by kids in retaliation, but now I understand they were digging their own grave by locking children out of any opportunities but to depend on good graces of their parents. Maybe if you were willing to share and let the young man get some skin in the game of his own, you would have had a partner instead of an enemy.
