UK wants to force social media platforms to artificially downrank user-made content in favour of state media

Plans to hand established broadcasters and media companies greater prominence on digital platforms such as YouTube and TikTok have been unveiled, as ministers warned online misinformation risked becoming “existential for our democracy”.

In proposals that set up a new clash with global tech companies, content from the likes of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 would have to be awarded more promotion by their algorithms – with special rules considered for times of social unrest or crisis.

It comes after a concerted campaign by the UK’s public service broadcasters (PSBs), who have also been arguing their content needs to be safeguarded to protect the “shared social fabric of the UK”.

They have long harboured concerns that their content is being drowned out by less reliable content, or demoted by the sheer weight of English-language material generated in the US.
Murray said the shift towards online platforms was “existential for media, but also existential for our democracy”, pointing to the amount of misinformation detected during last week’s Makerfield byelection.

A government consultation on the issue, published on Tuesday, signals that greater prominence for news coverage could be extended to local and national newspapers, labelling them as “trustworthy providers”.

It sets up the delicate task of defining which outlets count as trustworthy providers – a definition that is likely to be fought over fiercely by news outlets, broadcasters and content creators.

Guy Black, deputy chair of the Telegraph Media Group and chair of the News Media Association, said: “The government is right to highlight the growing problem of misinformation online, but the solution must ensure that media diversity is protected, maintaining public access to diverse and plural sources of trusted information.”

Social media companies have previously been sceptical about artificially boosting the prominence of traditional media, arguing that it goes against the principle of creator content.
Other types of high-quality content from public service media could also be given prominence.

The BBC, funded through the licence fee, as well as ITV and Channel 4 are now all trying to boost their presence on YouTube. However, the economics of YouTube remain challenging for them.

“TV remains at the heart of our society,” said Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary. “It is key to supporting social cohesion and is a cornerstone of our democracy, which is why, as the technology underpinning it changes, we are making sure it is protected for generations to come.”

Yes, worthwile content was being actively deranked on these platforms but it was easy enough to 'train' the algorithm to suggest such content to you anyway. I view this as a clear attempt at escalating these policies to the point where social media might soon resemble jewgle search which when given any kind of political query shits out 20 pages of mainstream media articles before showing a single independent result.

Then youtube destroyed the good algorithm with horrible one causing low quality stuff and A.I slop to dominate

Now UK wants a fix.
This is nonsense, I wouldn't mind legislation which did something to limit the amount of AI slop online but this is not it. Why would that require promoting "trustworthy" mainstream media companies over *all* user-generated content, Ai or otherwise?

So much manipulation. They even stuck the "threatens our democracy" crap there a few times, ugh.

As much as I hate media driven by profit, which is almost the entirety of cucktube today - state propaganda is a lot worse. Prepare for getting told how based war is and how you need to go die because of country duty. How there need to be AI CCTV for safety and AI drones hunting "terrorists". How you need to take the safe and effective vaccine. How kids and teens need to be banned from the internet lest they encounter some "misinformation". How they'll graciously give disabled people a "dignified" death by MAID, and so on...

1984 coming closer. The perfectly prepared narrative, being infused into millions of brains, unavoidably.

Three more years of this shit government and they are out, then we will see if the change will make any difference. Probably not, we will just move from one bunch of greedy bastards to another and the people behind the scenes will continue as is.

You probably misunderstood me, because the current situation, is the inverse of what you said.

whenever I search for something, say "Iran war", I get 20 pages of "independent result" before a real news channel result appear. (ofcourse exaggerating here.)

Obviouly because these results are trash? I would pick say a news video from CNN (edited by satan himself) over a slop or some random school dropout opinion.

people acctually taking that as a good thing is a hope really.
But both ways destroy democracy, if you had the CNN, BBC or whatever UK gov wants opinion, or the school dropouts opinion, then having ONE opinion means no democracy.

1-Hitler seriously found it easy to do so, when will whites infidels change...
2-Nah, the argument as I explained here viewtopic.php?t=17 is that the goys are growing more agressive and uncontrolable day by day, while govs are going weak day by day, and unless they do something the country will become anarchist in seconds, but govs can't simply go "oh my people, you are activating barbarian mode but... we don't have a country to send you to DIE, like russia is already screwed up fighting a dot in the map, and sending you would effectivelly erase it from existance lol".
3-Reminds me when conspiracy theorists said it will result in the golden billion, and like a trillion shot was taken and only few died
4-I am banning my children from the internet regardless of Govs enforcing that policy or not, feel free to keep your children into obviously harmful internet
5-I wonder how the western people would go against this while majority of them are atheist, will they go like: "No, save these bunch of atoms that are undergoing chain reaction, don't like stop this chain reaction because aaaa no reason just don't."

I am falling short to my praising of God, he created me here in beatiful north africa, and not the west swamp..
Maybe you'll care when the only available Islam channel is Sam Shamoun's :D.
